Computer Science at Heidelberg University

Computer science at Heidelberg University is characterized by a broad spectrum of research and teaching. A key unique selling point of Computer Science in Heidelberg, in addition to excellent basic research in Computer Science, is the strong interdisciplinary orientation, which is reflected in a large number of research projects as well as in teaching.

The range of programs includes the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (100% and 50%), the English-language Master's degree in Data and Computer Science, the Master of Education with the profile lines of teaching at high school and teaching at secondary level I, and the Subject Extension Master. We offer students at both Bachelor's and Master's degrees the opportunity to delve deeper into an application area and thus look beyond the horizon of Computer Science and get to know important application areas of Computer Science, for example, in medicine, economics, physics, or geosciences.

Thanks to the many large and medium-sized companies in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and the cooperation between IT and industrial partners (including SAP AG, SAS, ABB, Bosch, Roche, BASF, Sovanta AG), Computer Science graduates have above-average career opportunities in our region as well as contacts to professional practice during their studies, e.g., in the form of an industrial internship. For example, the IT-Talk series of lectures gives an insight into digitization strategies and information technologies of various companies and institutions.


Research. The proximity and interlocking with central and external scientific institutions, in particular the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy forms the basis for excellent research and teaching in Computer Science. This is also reflected in a large number of interdisciplinary research projects in which Research Groups in Computer Science are significantly involved, e.g.,

There are also collaborations with non-university research institutions such as the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) or the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

Mathematikon3

Mathematikon. Almost all Computer Science working groups are located in the Mathematicon. This building was handed over to Heidelberg University by the Klaus Tschira Foundation in 2017. Offices for the institutes and areas for teaching with a lecture hall, seminar and group work rooms were created here on around 10,000 square meters. The faculty library can also be found on the ground floor of the Mathematicon. High-performance computers, IT rooms, and the robotics laboratory are housed in special areas. Up until 2017, when they moved into the Mathematicon, the institutes and facilities of the faculty and the IWR were spread across seven buildings on campus.

The Mathematicon offers students an ideal environment for their studies in the form of very well-equipped seminar rooms and learning areas with boards and workspaces. Part B of the Mathematikon furthermore offers students and visitors shopping opportunities as well as additional gastronomy.
